Signing day happens at Heritage

Track and Cross Country Coach, Brian Runyon, recalls accolades of senior Cory Kennedy at signing day - Photo by Savannah Brown

On February 5th, 2020, 19 Heritage students signed to play their sports at the collegiate level. The signing ceremony was held in the auxiliary gym after school, where the athletes were seated in front of their banners.

Every athlete got a two-minute speech from one of their coaches, which detailed not only their achievements in their sport, but also their character in school and with their teammates. Some coaches spoke for multiple athletes, especially Coach Tyler Munro,  who had seven baseball players and one softball player going to continue their careers at several wonderful colleges. However, one of the most impressive speeches came from head Cross Country coach Brian Runyon, who spoke for Cory Kennedy, who will be running next year at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York.

Athletic Director Brock Becker took the time to make banners for all of the athletes, which made for a very personal and heartwarming experience. Another wonderful part of the celebration was Autumn Barela, who will be the first girl in Heritage history to sign somewhere for girls’ wrestling. Barela has been a huge contributor to the team, and will continue to be a wonderful leader at Central Methodist University.

Signing day marked a milestone day for several athletes at Heritage, and was truly a wonderful event to celebrate moving on to the next level of athletics.
