Pop punk has really made a comeback lately, with Fall Out Boy and Blink 182 dominating the radio and a flurry of new bands showing up in unexpected places with their own unique styles and takes on the genre. One of these fresh new bands that nobody seems to know about is New Politics, from none other than Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
I wouldn’t say I’m a dedicated fan of pop punk or dance punk, but I love New Politics. Their electric guitar-centered instrumentals, heavy beats, and upbeat sound have completely won me over. Their sophomore album, A Bad Girl in Harlem, is bringing well-deserved public attention to New Politics this year, and I’ve already been hearing “Harlem” and “Tonight You’re Perfect” on 93.3 every once in a while.
By far, my favorite song by New Politics is also their most popular song- “Harlem.” It starts full-out like any poppy earworm should, with a heavy beat and a driving bass. The hook is extremely upbeat and catchy. My only complaint about the song is that it’s only 2:43 minutes long, but that only makes me want to listen to it again.
The rest of the album is also fantastic. “Berlin” has more of a 90s alternative rock sound than other tracks on the album, and it’s loud and catchy enough to be a favorite for many fans. “Tonight You’re Perfect” is a classic love song with a charming melody and an upbeat tempo like “Harlem.” Overall, New Politics is well worth checking out and I’ve heard they’re also really good live. Paramore and Fall Out Boy fans will get to see New Politics open at Red Rocks on August 12, 2014. I’ll be shamelessly listening to “Harlem” on repeat until then.by
